I appreciate your response Jeff and I must add that you have an amazing website with tons of valuable information. I live in Canada and ” winter condition ” is part of my life for 6 months a year with the temperature plunging to -22 degrees Fahrenheit and have done many winter hikes. However I take every bit of information you have provided into consideration and once again I appreciate that. My plan is to do this hike, if everything goes as planned, during this Christmas break. Have a wonderful time and it’d be great to do a hike beside you one day here in Canada or down in the US.

Hi Tammy! Yes, at this time of year the trail is easy to follow, but I still recommend bringing a map and/or download a map using AllTrails or GaiaGPS.

There are no junctions — just follow the trail. There is one short reroute around a large downed tree, but it’s pretty obvious.

Have fun!

Perfect day for getting the crystal clear views – no smoke, a few puffy clouds – this was great! The trail remains riddled with fallen trees, but hikers have created as many “work-arounds” as are likely possible. There’s a few wildflowers as you go along, with the majority on the top section of the hike – still very fresh and pretty. I saw a few small snow spots up top, but those will melt away very soon. Trail is in good shape, but be ready for the downed tree stuff. A bit of the usual wind at the summit, and lots of pollinators. Very enjoyable hike!

I wonder if the tree will grow back in the next 20 years! Heavy snow near the top and crossed two stream where you can probably filter water. Have fun!

I always wanted to make the longer trip and come out at Nira. Once got stuck at Santa Cruz camp for a week due to a storm, a back country ranger lived in the cabin and let us sleep inside. We once went in the dark after a Friday night in IV, only made it to little pine springs and it started raining. Those were the days, we’d go camping to get away from parents and party. A few other choice spots in the SB mountains.

It’s great! The cul-de-sac mentioned as a parking spot is fenced off now, but I parked in a business lot by the fence and was fine. The markers pointing out the trail have definitely faded (we’ve had a TON of rain this winter), but I saw a few people (some with dogs, some leashed, some not) and chose to stay on the paved parts and was fine. The descriptions above of landmarks were excellent and easy to follow, and after a round trip of a little more than 2 hours and 5.5 miles or so, I’m back home and very happy I picked this one.

As the author mentions, “this trail is not for beginners.” It’s not because of the elevation gain (although the first section does climb steeply) but more because this trail is not maintained by anyone and is loose scree and gravel in places (with a long slide down if you slip) especially below Mt Burbank. It gets traveled enough to mitigate the unstable base, but after rains there are portions that require a fair amount of caution.

Michael – thanks for the email. Surprisingly this year will be very SIMILAR to 2017, in that 2017 was a BIG SNOW Year. So even though we hiked this loop in late August, we still had snow from Wanda Lake up to Muir Pass and then down the other side to Helen Lake. Microspikes were helpful here for sure. We also had snow on Bishop Pass. This year, 2023, is another fairly big snow year with MORE on the way – so I would say if you plan on doing this hike in early season June/July, be prepared for A LOT of snow in the passes and some pretty deep stream crossings including Evolutiion Creek which could be waist deep! Given this year’s snow pack, I’d suggest a late start – Mid to late August or even September – unless you like the big snow and big water. Up to you. Enjoy and make sure to let us know how it goes.

Hi Tim.
Given the volume of snow we are currently getting in the Sierra, early season (June/July) might still have snow on Glen Pass and deeper water at the kings river crossing.

August/September would be best I suspect for this year.

October can be great!…but it’s also shoulder season so you could have anything from warm and calm to early season fall storms. Because of that storm risk you’d be prudent to carry extra gear. But if you’re flexible, you can get several permits for different dates and then just go based on the 10 day weather report.

Have a great walk in the woods!

It states: “If you are parked outside of Shore Acres State Park and you are hiking the trails, you may continue on the trail through the park but you may not enter the Shore Acres Gardens with your pet.”

Not sure what you mean by Bayview/not Bayview. EDIT: I think autocorrect foiled both of us! Yes, the correct name is Barview. I’ve updated the post accordingly.

The park opens at 7;00 a.m. For the second day in a row we have been woken up be people in the park on the trails making noise before 6;00 am. We have to be up early all week for work and would like to be able to sleep in a little on the weekends. The hours are posted but a lot of people try and beat the heat I guess. If you do remember there are houses that back up to the park and they can hear you laugh in and talking on the trails. Your voices carry and wake homeowners and children up. Thank you in advance for obeying the parks hours and being respectful to the homeowners.

Easy to follow. Minimal mosquitos near Piute Pass entrance from JMT. Hiked at night but needed GAIA GPS app to stay on course coming down from Bishop Pass. I recommend starting at South Lake first. At north lake, we walked to the main road (about 2 miles) then hitchhiked back to our car. Actual distance from trail head to trailhead was more like 55 miles.

You can get them several weeks in advance and then they also do a release 10 days prior to the date you want and three days prior to the date you want. They are not the easiest thing to get but you do need to have one you can get one at recreation.gov

Hey Ron, this trail guide shows the connection. Check the map (you can pan and zoom or switch to full-screen if that helps). The lower trail runs basically diagonally up and around until it meets the upper trailhead. The only “tricky” part is there are a couple sections where there is a loop trail (or old forest service road) that you hit and you may have to look carefully for the continuation on the other side (sometimes it’s along the road a few yards). Other than that, pretty straightforward.

It may be helpful to bring a GPS app like GaiaGPS or AllTrails. That will help you stay on course as well.

However, when I try to start at the lower end at the parking lot, I cannot find the trail for the upper trail. The only way I have ever gotten to the top is by driving on a horrible road. It must be around 8-10 miles of road that nearly ruined my car. At the end I found a small parking lot and went to the top. But I cannot find the upper trail from the lower trail when I start at the bottom. I have looked at several maps, but they do not show a detailed way to connect the upper and lower trails. I do not want to drive that road ever again. Any suggestions? Thank You.

I have been having a # of medical tests. Tomorrow is the carterroid artery sonogram at CORA.
If I pass that test, if the cardiologist has a chance to read it before Saturday if not I may bag out.
On the side of caution. I passed the echo heart test with flying colors and consequently cardiologist canceled the rest of the test echo stress test.
I have been hiking and riding my bike a lot but a few weeks ago had a blackout while walking in the evening near my home. This is why all the tests. It seemed to be tied into a short bout of covid break thru infection. But med people do not know for sure. My test begins at 1:40 tomorrow afternoon and will take approximately an hour, Friday.
I will text you and/or reply on the site for Maiden Hike.

More laud than gilt o’er-dusted.

Hi Lana!

For the permit, call the San Jacinto Ranger District at 909-382-2921 and they can help you sort out permit options. Generally speaking, it’s harder to get permits for holidays and weekends.

There is typically no water in September at the spigot in Round Valley, so plan accordingly.

The sun sets in nearby Idyllwild at 7:00 PM on September 10th, so if you get to camp by then, you should have enough light to setup your tent. Cooking dinner in dim light is easier that pitching a tent, so setup the tent first.

Happy to consult! Shoot me an email at jeff@socalhiker.net and we can set something up.

Is it still possible to get a permit for camping for then? Is it safe to assume there will be no water?
Lastly what time would we need to head out Saturday to do the hike in order to camp before it gets dark. We are not too speedy. Lastly, do you do private consulting for planning back packing trips?
Thank you

But there are some details that are missing that you may consider adding to your article around directions. Here is the details while still fresh in my mind.

Once you get past the initial fire road gate, take a Left to Oak Road and within 0.1 miles, make a Right to Mitchell Rock Trail. The first major intersection is at the end of Eagle Peak Road. Here you will have to look for a small trail that leads into thick bushes. This is the Ridge Trail. This is really very steep climb and you may be all alone on this part of the hike. The rest of your direction is good. On the way back look for sign to Juniper Trail to the campground. This is a fire road all the way back to parking lot. Overall it took us close to 8 hours to complete the loop in close to 100 degree weather (July 28th). Thanks again for this article

I went today 1/21/2022 to look for the Tom Lucas Trail Camp. I was not successful. I went to 4.3 miles in and looked all around where it was supposed to be on my map, but never found it. It was very overgrown everywhere, and I went through overgrown brush all along last mile of trail. I was wearing long pants and jacket to get through. Water was flowing well along the creek, and the main waterfall was very beautiful. I hope the camp is restored one day, its a beautiful canyon.

There is a road that goes nearly all the way to the summit. At the summit is a building (the summit block is actually INSIDE the building). There is a visitor center and observation deck. Of course, driving to the top doesn’t deliver the same satisfaction as hiking up. 😉

Whitney. I went in over Kearsarge Pass which is out of Independence, and up Onion Valley. Once over Kearsarge you drop down to the JMT and head south. One reason for going this way is it was much easier to get a permit for Kearsarge Pass, then for Mt. Whitney. Heading south on the JMT takes you up to Forrester Pass, another awesome mountain pass that should be on everyone’s bucket list. I remember seeing the junction for the HST on day two, and spent the night just south of there. From there it’s on to Guitar Lake and up Mt. Whitney. I was 67 when I did this hike, I’m in pretty decent shape and didn’t have any problems at all. The hike up to Whitney from Guitar Lake in incredible.

How did you calculate 3,200′ for the hike up from the Rancho San Antonio parking lot? The “shorter” route is via Stephen Arbor (FKA PG&E) trail and quarry trail and I find it brutal, with some sections of 800′ in 1.1 miles. The Stephen Arbor trail does have significant us and downs, which adds to the absolute ascents, but I still figured it at about 2,900′ (2800 – 400 altitude change, plus 500′ up/down.
Upper high meadows trail is more gradual, without any significant up/down.
Easiest approach is from Los Trancos (one of the ones you mention from Page Mill), only about 3 miles, and crowded with wildflowers in early-mid spring.
I’ve done some backpacking in the ‘Dacks!

When We hiked a few days ago, and it looked so dry and yellow everywhere. There wasn’t any water to filter, but there were drinking water at the camp site at mile 2 and also the camp site close to the top of Rose Peak at mile 10. It worked out perfectly. My Garmin indicated my entire trip to be a bit over 20 miles with an elevation gain/lost 6000 ft.

It is useful on rough terrain, especially downhill. However, it gets in the way on steep terrain. It is great for stream crossing. It has taken my full body weight in dicey situations and has served as a glissade device. I dispense with it when I want to move fast on flat ground. Two poles would simply get in my way too often. And, I would never trust carbon or aluminum to save my life in full body and pack weight situations. Increased calorie burn is another very good reason Not to use them on a long trip. My suspicion is that hiking poles are promoted because they are, probably, the highest markup priced device they have for sale.

When we started hiking in California we headed straight for Whitney went to 12000 for a day hike..epic of course..really want to summit one day.Acclimated a bit in lone pine..drank some powder…no problem at the 12000 ft mark next day went to death valley…got a nose bleed..lol .After Mt baldy and half dome we hit gorgonio on our last Big hike there.Starting out with headlights no problem coming back down once we were on headlights again I found it difficult to navigate by traditional means. As a hiker I try to notice things along the way in the daylight so thankfully I finally came upon a tree root I had noticed water coming out of on the way up then I knew we wouldn’t have to wait out the night temporarily disoriented. We spent a lot of that day with some younger girls from San Pedro and they stayed at summit longer than Wendy and I so I always wondered how they made out cause they weren’t in too prepared. My girl was whimpering a few miles from the car ,first time ever,I was almost burned up too.My legs were sore for 3 days and that never happens.Great adventures, so grateful, were in our 50s now dont ever want to stop hiking out there,San Jacinto is next on the list.Jmt would be the dream.Best wishes to you and all the great people met in the socal wilderness….if there is such a thing anymore..lol..maybe a Tuesday?

If you look at the bottom of the blog post, you’ll see we hiked it on July 25th. Usually by mid- late-July you can go an it’s mostly snow free. Could be earlier though, depending on the snowfall for the year.

Mount Pilchuck is part of the PNW Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge, so as hikes are logged, that’s also a good place for beta. Currently there are none logged for Pilchuck in 2021, but you can see them when they are on this page: https://socialhiker.net/six-pack-peaks-challenge/pacific-northwest/2021-hike-logs/

Wear proper hiking shoes, not tennis shoes . Bring water . If you think you have enough , you don’t . bring more . Wear a wide brimmed hat . Leave predawn !! DON’T LEAVE TRASH ! There is zero shade , and its very steep . Its super challenging IF you’re prepped. If you’re not , bring a garmin with a SOS feature.

Its a big day even if your going downhill. Keep this in mind while trying to summit. The best way to finish would be to spend the night on the muir snowfield and finish the trek to the base the following day.
Dont plan on doing anything the following day unless you are an intrepid athlete and are used to crushing out big days.

However, I have been cooking daily real meals on my CampStove on several camping trips now. Balancing our coffee pot is a bit tricky, but any pot bigger than the top opening can sit there as long as you make sure your campstove is relatively stable and flat. I specifically like this stove for cooking with a wok. It’s really hot and the heat blows out of the top nicely concentrated. Perfect for Asian cooking.
Do make sure you have an easy way to lift whatever you put on your campstove though. You’ll have to add wood while cooking full meals.

I’ve done something similar, though I try my best to keep away from the Poodle Dog bush. I start at the entry to Echo Mountain and head up (to Echo Mountain). I take a break there, then head up to Inspiration Point – the last mile or so is pretty steep. I take a nice break at Inspiration Point, then head down the fire road to the Mt Wilson Rd fire road. Up another few miles to the saddle, then up to Mt Disappointment and then to San Gabriel Peak – the end is super steep and loose! Back down to the saddle, then up to Mt Lowe. Take a break at the top, then head down the West Trail back to Mt Wilson Road fire road – follow all the way down to the short connector that takes you back to Mt Lowe, then down to the car.

I’ve wanted to add Mt Markham and Deception to the route, but the Poodle Dog Bush worries me and I typically go when it’s warm/hot – I don’t like the cold and up there it’s too cool during the winter. I wear shorts and a short sleeve shirt, so Poodle Dog Bush could be a problem.

I have seen it on the Mt Wilson Trail on the last section of single track (at least I think it’s Poodle Dog Bush. I didn’t know what it was when I first saw it and I did brush into it – it’s unavoidable. No outbreak, but I don’t want to push my luck. Or maybe the one I ran into isn’t Poodle Dog Bush – I heard there’s a similar plant that isn’t an irritant. Oh yeah, it kinds smells like pot – I noticed the smell when I was hiking and I thought it was interesting that someone would be smoking up there – then I realized it was the plant!

Keep up the great hiking trips and information.

It sounds like you know your way around camping but may be a bit new to backpacking. If so, I would encourage you to take a short trip with an experienced group to get your feet wet first.

As far as the permits, wilderness permits work differently from campsite permits and are reserved according to the entry point into the, well, wilderness. In this case, you would need a wilderness permit for the Onion Valley trailhead. The wilderness permit is valid for the duration of your trip, including crossing into King’s Canyon NP. Campsites provided in this excellent guide are merely suggestions and cannot be reserved as it is dispersed, primitive camping. Essentially, you camp wherever you want as long as you are following the rules.

I was 17 years old, my brother was 14 and my best friend was 16. We hiked from the campground around Kintla Lake, passed the ranger cabin, on to Upper Kintla, and then returned all in the same day. It was an experience I will never forget. We were all very, very stupid because we didn’t have bear spray or even bear bells. We were also extremely lucky, because two weeks later, after we return home, they were two 19 year-old girls who were killed by Grizzly bears in separate incidents. Both girls, who worked for the Park Service, had been backpacking and camping. You can Google the situation and read about their terrifying and tragic deaths.

I’m a local, and have hiked Mt. Diablo numerous times on different trails over the years. To my chagrin, I didn’t know the actual summit is located inside the tower at the top, even when I was inside the building. totally missed that sign. One thing your readers should know: Mt. Diablo isn’t suitable for hiking year round. It gets really hot and dry in the summer, like one commenter said, it can reach 100 degrees in the shade. Hikers have to have a high tolerance for heat, or else start before sunup, bring lots of water, and take rest breaks in the shade often. We had a bad wildfire season this year (2020) so I would be cautious hiking there during times of extreme fire danger.

Thank you for this site. I just discovered it a minute ago! I have been leading my group of about 20 hikers on this trail since May 2020, smack in the middle of the pandemic. Trails are wide, which is great. We park at the shopping center just like you and we meet at Starbucks, just like you. We take Monarch Trail and then come down behind those big houses at Bear Brand. So I am thinking we do 4.6 miles.
I have heard that you can take this Colinas Ridge to the beach. Do you know how? I want to try it out myself before I post it for my group. I also need to see how many miles roundtrip, because I imagine it might be as much as 10 miles from the trailhead on Golden Lantern and Marina Hills. Thank you in advance!

The toughest part is the long slug to the saddle. Above that, very few other hikers and the climb to Ontario is modest and very pleasant. A few hiking sites mention “quickly” taking the spur to Bighorn, which is on the same ridge. But just be aware that it’s easy to lose the trail in the manzanita and it’s much steeper and looser than it looks from the junction! Definitely doable, just give yourself time and be prepared if you take Ontario first.

Howie, the San Jacinto State Park is a separate agency from the San Bernardino National Forest, and different rules apply. However, day hike permits in the San Jacinto State Park are indeed free.

For details see this page: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=636

It states:

Day Use Wilderness Permits are free and available 24 hours at:
Idyllwild Ranger Station (Park Headquarters) in Idyllwild
Long Valley Ranger Station on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway side

Hey (fellow) Bend Local! I live in northeast Bend. My recommendation for hiking is to do this as an out-and-back to Happy Valley, mainly because the Farewell Trail is hot, dry and more exposed.

I also do some mountain biking (that’s part of how this site was started) although I’m more interested in bikepacking these days. I’ve got another segment of the Oregon Timber Trail planned for later in September.

With all the tight corners and steep drop offs it isn’t great for hiking. Happy hiking!

Unfortunately, it’s really hot right now where I live and while my dog loves hiking, she feels differently about swimming. We continue to stay away from crowds (if there are any) and I consistently notice how couples cross the street in neighborhoods to maintain distance along the sidewalks.

The benefits of hiking are many. I really hope we can all get back on the trails, or in the tents soon. We were just starting to plan camping adventures when this whole pandemic began. Places of much higher risk are beginning to open back up where social distancing is more difficult and less desirable. However, on the trails it’s possible to complete a hike without touching anything, or coming into contact with others if you choose the right ones.

My favorite part of this article was the bit about the “5am assholes”. I’m sure that is definitely a low-risk and peaceful time to be on the trails, but I will never be that! No, I’m much more likely to be found on the trails around sundown. Which time is better? I guess it’s all a matter of perspective.

Hi Bob – for the campsites we used (in our write up) there was plenty of room in all of the bear boxes on the trail – never a problem fitting food in them. I always remind people “don’t be a bogart” and stuff your entire pack in the box – just put your canister or your stuff sack full of food/smelly stuff in there and keep everything else at your campsite. Bottom line: PLENTY of room in the bear boxes.

“beer boxes”! Hmm, maybe wishful thinking there. Of course I meant bear boxes!

Greg, great to hear about the bear boxes along the loop. NOT bringing a bear vault would be welcome. The Tom Harrison maps shows box icons (beer boxes) all along the way. I may use those, and a PCT-hang with a Kevlar bag for when they’re not.
Question for you: Are the boxes large enough that in areas where many are camping they can accommodate them all?
I have this same trip planned starting 9/7 and it looks like I’ll be doing it solo. My wife isn’t too keen about that, but it sounds like this is a well-traveled path, so I think I’ll be fine (not my first solo trip).
Thank you for the excellent write up!
Bob

Tom Harrison map titled “Kearsarge Pass Rae Lakes Loop”. I picked one up on Amazon, but you can also get it from good outdoor shops such as REI.
